Trees, to 25 m high; bark pale grey, flaking off in thin scales, warty lenticellate; blaze dull yellow; young parts pubescent. Leaves imparipinnate, alternate, estipulate; rachis 6.5-23 cm long, stout, angular, swollen at base, pubescent; leaflet 5-9, alternate, estipellate; petiolule to 10 mm, slender, grooved above, pubescent; lamina 6-15 x 3-5 cm, ovate, elliptic-ovate, elliptic-oblong or lanceolate, base oblique or cuneate, apex acuminate, margin entire, coriaceous, glabrous; lateral nerves 12-20 pairs, parallel, prominent, intercostae reticulate, obscure. Flowers bisexual, greenish-yellow, subsessile, in axillary few flowered panicles; calyx cupular, shortly 4-lobed, puberulus, subentire; petals 4, 5 x 2.5 mm, oblong, spreading, imbricate; disc tubular, toothed, glabrous, exceeding the ovary; staminal tube shortly toothed, hispid along 4 vertical lines outside; ovary superior, hirsute, 2-celled, ovules 1-2 in each cell; attenuated into a long style; stigma broadly capitate. Fruit a capsule 8 x 6 cm, obovoid, purple or yellow, acute at apex, vertically ribbed, coarsely rugose.
