Botanical Features

Lofty trees, to 35 m high, bole straight, sometimes with small buttresses; bark yellowish-brown, deeply spirally fissured; blaze red with white streaks; branchlets subquadrangular, minutely brown tomentose. Leaves simple, opposite, decussate, estipulate; petiole  slender, grooved above, glabrescent; lamina  elliptic, elliptic-lanceolate, base acute, apex acute or acuminate, margin entire, glabrous, shining, coriaceous; lateral nerves many. Flowers bisexual, white, in panicles or racemes, terminal and from the axils of the upper leaves; peduncle slender; pedicel slender, white, sparsely to densely tomentellous; sepals 4, concave, elliptic, ciliolate, inner 2 petalloid ; petals  white, orbicular, early cauducous, inner ones smaller; long; filaments united at the base; ovary superior, slender, 1-celled, ovule one, erect;  flexuous; stigma peltate, concave, obscurely lobed. Fruit a drupe, 2-2.5 cm long, obliquely ovoid, dark purple, smooth.
